Using Sharepoint Server on a VMWare Virtual December 12, 2010

Posted by Chad in Tech, VMware.

Notice incredibly high CPU usage on your VMWare virtual machine with Sharepoint? One of the processes using the most CPU being OWSTIMER.EXE?
Turn off the VMWare time sync with the host. Apparently you get a race condition where it gets the time from the host, then the time from the domain, and if they’re not perfectly the same, OWSTIMER keeps triggering over and over and over, processing all the jobs it has constantly and killing performance.
