amazing-spider-man-renew-your-vowsFace Front, True Believers!

I just finished reading the Trade Paperback release of “Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows”.  It has been a very long time since I’ve had a TPB hold my attention so much that I read it cover-to-cover in one sitting.  I enjoyed this story in such a deeply personal way that upon finishing it, I was inspired to sit down and type out this post in hopes that it may inspire others to read it as well.

Please, read on!  And fear not, for there are no significant spoilers to this TPB contained within this post.  I’m not going to talk about the story, but only briefly touch upon the family dynamic.

I really enjoy listening to audiobooks while I’m driving.  About a decade ago, I started listening to audiobooks in the car and I honestly have rarely listened to the radio since then.  Until very recently, I carried around a thick CD case which I kept filled to capacity with books (which usually meant I had 2 or 3 books in the car with me).

post_captainThis week, I’m re-reading “Post Captain” (the second in the Aubrey-Maturin series) by Patrick O’Brian.  The series is a sequence of historical adventures about a British ship captain (Jack Aubrey, RN) and his ship’s surgeon and best friend (Doctor Stephen Maturin) during the Napoleonic Wars.

I love these novels… this is probably the 4th or 5th time I’ve read them… and each time I read this particular volume, this line always brings a smile to my face.

“… wit is the unexpected copulation of ideas.” – Stephen Maturin

I really like that.

storm_front I’ve decided to re-read the “Dresden Files” novels by Jim Butcher.  I enjoy the character of Harry Dresden and several of the supporting characters very much.  I wish Jim had done more with the Michael Carpenter character… and Bob is just awesome!

Mind you, some of the stories read a bit too much like an RPG game, but they’re entertaining just the same.  Plus, Jim puts a nice modern spin on the wizard world… like crafting magic potions out of energy drinks or bribing the faerie folk with pizza take-out.  It’s really entertaining stuff.

So I cracked opened “Storm Front” yesterday afternoon.  The end of Chapter One always makes me smile.

"Paranoid?  Probably.  But just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean there isn’t an invisible demon about to eat your face." – Harry Dresden

I’ve been re-reading “Kidnapped” by Robert Louis Stevenson this week.  In truth, it’s been one of my favorite books since I was a teenager.  Anyway, today I came upon this blurb which stuck out in my mind a bit more than it had before…

"There are two things that men should never weary of, goodness and humility; we get none too much of them in this rough world among cold, proud people." – David Balfour
